Do you ever find yourself falling into similar patterns day after day? Or catch yourself thinking back to how things used to be in the good old days? When you stop to think about it, you may be surprised by how much of the past you hold onto.
I recently listened to a podcast that showed me how we love to stick to our patterns, but why we need to learn to overcome them to put our best foot forward in the world. The episode gave me the motivation I needed to open my mind and put the past behind me, all in less than 15 minutes.
Holding on to Past Experiences
Jason Glass, the head of Titleist Performance Institute's fitness advisory board, created a podcast called Coach Glass Podcast. In this episode, Glass shares his personal experience with having doors opening and closing for him. So what does that have to do with dwelling or staying in the same place? He goes on to talk about how we instinctively want to hold back. Every time we're faced with a new life stage, like taking the next step in our career or making a move to something we're passionate about, we tend to hold on to past experiences. This is because they are old and familiar and we want to stay rooted in them.
I remember when I first made the move to California after living in Fort Myers, Florida. It was a huge transition for me, and I remember it like it was yesterday. Not everything in California is going to be like Florida, and so it was scary to make the move at first, but I did it. Like my move, a new job isn't necessarily going to be exactly like an old job. The new team's operation isn't going to run exactly like the last.
Closure and Letting Go
So what happens if we hold on to our past experience and the doors we left open? We tend to carry our emotions and limit our exposure to new worlds and experiences. Glass says, "To truly be present in the room or stage of life you have entered, you need to have closure on the past."
So as you go about your day, pay attention to see how many times you mention things you used to do, whether it be in a previous job or a previous location where you lived. Become aware of these actions and actively work to let go of past experiences that are holding you back. Open your mind toward new and exciting opportunities and habits; you might find that some are right in front of your eyes.
