As a women's organization, we are anchored in the belief that everyone deserves an equal opportunity, a fair chance, a level playing field.
Today, in cities across the United State, black citizens - supported by allies here and around the world - are fighting to be seen, heard and most importantly, respected.
WISE is a beautiful tapestry of women from all walks of life, and while we're all feeling anxious and fearful, we have to acknowledge the reality that many within our community are feeling the pains of these injustices more deeply and personally. Now more than ever, we need to join together not just in words, but in deeds. We must demand more from our organizations and ourselves.
Dr. Jennifer L. Eberhardt, a Stanford psychology professor and author of the book Biased, offers this: "Wherever we are, however we are positioned, we have a responsibility to take action. ...When we stand by and allow racial disparities to deepen, we participate in an injustice that cuts so many lives short and deprives us all of their contributions to the world. And as we watch, our out humanity is undercut as well."
Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd are the most recent American citizens who have lost their lives because of the systemic racism present in our society. Our WISE community must have the courage, the humanity and the willingness to listen, to consider and to understand the impact of racism on black communities. Only then can we begin to see a way forward.
WISE stands with all who are fighting to eradicate racism and inequality wherever they exist. We seek to positively affect change starting in our own house. We will continue to educate ourselves and this community so we can consistently call out injustice when we see it and hear it.
