Today is National Girls & Women in Sports Day!

WISE SF Bay Area would like to recognize and celebrate the importance of equal opportunity for all girls and women in sports. It is a celebration that inspires girls and women to play and be active and realize their full power.

We are seeing first hand the women who are breaking stereotypes, holding occupations that for as long as we can remember have been male-only. From Becky Hammon as an assistant coach in the NBA, to Katie Sowers becoming the first female and openly gay female to coach in a Super Bowl. In 2015, Sarah Thomas became the first female referee in the NFL, and in 2019 she made more NFL history by becoming the first female on-field official in a playoff game.

Barriers are being shattered everyday. Feeling empowered and the burning desire to reach full potential builds strong leaders. Whether that is excelling at any level in sports or in the office, working as part of a team from a young age builds that drive and determination. Current WISE member, former collegiate and pro volleyball player, Allison Whitson shared, “Playing volleyball at the collegiate and pro level-- I thrived on the challenge and working as hard as I could for my teammates next to me. The athlete mentality of being competitive, driven, goal-oriented, coachable and a team player has helped me get to where I am today both in work and everyday life.” The athlete mentality gives women the confidence to excel on and off the court and field.

More prominent male athletes are advocating for females today. Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors famously addressed a young girl’s powerful letter after voicing how the Curry 5’s only came in boys sizes with no options for girls or women. He then took immediate action and made sure his shoe line was gender inclusive. More importantly, young fan, Riley Morrison at the time was 9 years old, displayed the courage and confidence to speak up about the issue. Curry has also paved the way for gender equality and debuted “It’s Our Game,” a basketball camp just for girls. Most recently, he launched the Underrated Tour, a series of basketball camps for underrated high school players with an all-girls stop on the calendar.

Empowering women through sports builds leaders, giving women the tools to carry on with confidence, strength and character in sports and in life. Let’s make sure we celebrate equal opportunity for girls and women..Everyday! #NGWSD #LeadHerForward.
