The Kevin Show: An Olympic Athlete’s Battle With Mental Illness by Mary Pilon
Genre: Nonfiction

Comments

The Kevin Show tells the extraordinarily true story of Kevin Hall, a world-class sailor with bipolar disorder.

Hall experiences what is known as the “Truman Show” delusion, a reference to the Jim Carrey film in which the protagonist believes he is the lead actor in a reality television show. The internal “director” Hall hears leads him to startling and often dangerous episodes, making this book a riveting read.

Mary Pilon, author of The New York Times best-seller The Monopolists, crafts this unique, complicated story with a deft and engaging touch. Her respect for Hall and his family — literally the cast of characters — is stellar.

I recommend this book for anyone interested in appreciating an Olympic athlete’s ultimate competition — managing a complicated, yet rich life.

Indeed, The Kevin Show is a showstopper.
