After a progressive 15-year career, I chose to work on a freelance basis for the past 10 years. I am now looking to go back to work full time and have been told by a recruiter that she would not even consider me for one of her full-time searches because I am not working full-time now. How do I respond to that (and without sounding defensive) and overcome the apparent stigma that I wasn't even aware existed?
First, find another recruiter. A smart recruiter will look at your total experience, whether it has been as a permanent employee of a company or freelance, and determine if the experience fits the role. Freelance work does not mean it was always part-time, or part time at all.
Highlight your experience. Show what you achieved and how it matches the role you are going for. Keep pursuing what you want with the help of someone who understands what your experience brings.
