I've recently taken my entertainment event experience and moved into the sport events arena. I've found the culture in the sports industry more resistant to creativity than the entertainment industry. What advice do you have on adjusting to this new environment?

Answer

Adjusting to a new culture can always be a challenge. Often, you don’t need to change industries to experience a new culture — simply moving from one employer to another will provide new challenges.

When settling into a new company and culture, I advise people to sit back and observe for a month or two, allowing you to learn how things get done, who has the power and what the best approach is to introducing new ideas. Find a colleague with whom you work closely and ask them some questions about how things work and how they settled into the company when they started.

The people who succeed are the ones who understand that it is “new,” who don’t openly criticize the environment or compare it to the last employer and who listen, watch and learn. I have seen many bright people fail in a new company by ignoring the culture and trying to force change, which doesn’t work. You want your colleagues to get to know you before you start recommending change.
